Kura Whānau Reo

It is a government initiative to enable Iwi to provide te reo Māori learning programmes for whānau as participants who have ākonga learning te reo Māori as a subject or are learning through a Māori medium education pathway.

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated have partnered with Kauwaka Ltd to provide whānau participants with support and opportunities to strengthen their te reo Māori capabilities.  

About the kaupapa

This programme has been developed by a team of recognised language & cultural exponents.  

The team has worked hard to develop a tailored programme that meets the needs of whānau Māori.

The programme caters for all levels of language proficiency from levels 1-4.

  • Registrations are open to: 

    ALL whānau members of students who are learning te reo Māori as a subject or are learning through a Māori medium education pathway.

    Due to limited space of 80 participants, on receipt Kura Kāinga, Kura Tangata will confirm your enrolment. If we exceed the amount of spaces and we are able to keep your information for our records if any spaces become available, and for any similar kaupapa offered by Kura Kāinga, Kura Tangata.

  • There are no attendance or registration fees, this initiative is fully funded by the Ministry of Education.

    You will however need to: cover travel costs to attend the course and have access to the internet and have an appropriate device to fully participate in this kauapapa.

    Catering and learning resources will be provided.

  • LEVEL 1 Beginner - very little to basic communication skills & working knowledge upon completion whānau;

    • Knows basic greetings/ terms of address and can differentiate between Kia ora and Tēnā koe

    • Understand and correctly use “Kei te pēhea koe?” and basic responses to that question

    • Can identify five household objects in te reo Māori at random

    • Confidently understands and can use 5 basic commands in the home:

    LEVEL 2 Advanced Beginner – In addition to levels 1 upon completion whānau;

    • Can open and close the kaupapa with appropriate mihi and short introduction/closing

    • Can say a short welcome to a child/learner

    • Can understand and participate in mihimihi (including understanding and using pepeha)

    • Can engage in a short and basic conversation using the following phrases/questions and responses – “kia ora” “tēnā koe” “ko wai tō ingoa?” “nō hea koe?” “kei te pēhea koe?”

    LEVEL 3 Intermediate - In addition to levels 1-2 upon completion whānau;

    • Can confidently use simple instructional language in the home: go over there, give that to me, stop doing that, etc

    • Can conduct games in te reo Māori

    • Can pose and respond to questions in te reo Māori: where James is, what are you doing, how was your day, etc

    LEVEL 4 Advanced Intermediate - In addition to levels 1-3 upon completion whānau;

    • Can operate in an immersion environment including follow the instructions and respond to basic questions

    • Can have a conversation using the questions and answers that commonly feature in the early stage of an encounter

  • Wānanga Whakarauora ā-Whānau a wānanga to help whānau develop a whānau language plan.  

    Self-directed Learning where participants are implementing whānau language plan throughout the year.

    Kura Reo ā-Whānau a wānanga with all participants of this kaupapa to learn alongside kaiako who support whānau on their language journey.  

    Rauemi Ī-Matihiko: Online Resources & Classes unlimited access to an online platform with supportive resources at your own leisure and weekly online classes.

  • At this time, there is no qualification or tohu associated with Kura Whānau Reo. However, the Ministry alongside NZQA will be investigating the potential of micro-credentials for graduates.

  • All dates and venues will be made available and uploaded in due course.

  • Kura Kāinga, Kura Tangata will be providing support for the following levels:

    • LEVELS 1-2 Beginner — very little to basic communication skills / working knowledge

    • LEVELS 3-4 Advanced Beginner — good to very good command / good working knowledge

  • Kura Kāinga, Kura Tangata is fortunate to draw on the expertise of key te reo Māori champions and educators including Dr. Jeremy Tātere MacLeod & Dr. Sir Tīmoti Kāretu. The programme is being delivered by Kauwaka Ltd.

    This is in addition to a wider team of kaiako, historians and key leaders within the education workforce that we have engaged to support delivery.
