Our Story

Transformation through language and culture.

Kauwaka was established in 2020 as a vehicle for language and cultural revitalisation within Ngāti Kahungunu. Since then, we have experienced exponential growth and now deliver services across Aotearoa and internationally.

The name Kauwaka means a vessel or medium, reflecting our role as a conduit for fostering leadership, providing employment to learned graduates of our tribe’s language and cultural excellence programmes, and growing the Māori economy. Our energetic and passionate team is committed to the pursuit of transformation through language and culture.

The past few months have been challenging, but our commitment remains unwavering. The changing landscape in Te Whanganui a Tara has sent ripples across Aotearoa, leaving many wondering what’s next - including us at Kauwaka. Rather than focusing on what has been lost, we see this as an opportunity to evolve, innovate, and expand our impact.

We are actively developing new programmes, pioneering learning platforms, and fresh ways to connect and share our expertise.

Exciting changes are ahead. In the coming weeks, we will be launching new offerings and look forward to collaborating in new and meaningful ways in 2025.

Thank you for your continued support and belief in our shared vision. Your trust fuels our determination to move forward, ensuring that our language and culture remain strong for generations to come.
